Keith Richards Finally Chooses Sobriety
Source: Pixabay Since the 1960s, legendary guitarist for The Rolling Stones, Keith Richards, has been the posterchild for drugs, drinking and rock ‘n roll. And over the last five decades, he didn’t seem to be slowing down at all – until about a year ago. At 74, Richards admitted that he’d had enough of being wasted, but that he still enjoyed the occasional glass of wine or beer. When asked about drugs, he said he’d, “done ‘em all”. It’s possible that Richards was inspired by his bandmate, Ronnie Wood, who got sober in 2010. In the light of the band’s upcoming ‘No Filter’ 2019 tour, Richards is happy with his new way of living, though he’ll quickly admit that it was quite an adjustment.
Now-Sober Stars Who Quit Drinking
Many big names in the entertainment business have been down the substance abuse path. And many have chosen to change their ways to save their careers, relationships, and ultimately themselves. Elton John famously got sober in 1990 after seeing the AIDS epidemic take its toll on people around the world, while the birth of Eric Clapton’s son in 1986, prompted him to stay clean. Iron Man star, Robert Downey Jr. reclaimed his fame after years of substance abuse, and has been sober for nearly 15 years. The once out-of-control Brat Pack actor, Rob Lowe, received the Spirit of Sobriety award in 2015, for celebrating 25 years of being clean, contributing his success story to his wife. Hunky leading man, Gerard Butler, has also been embracing a sober lifestyle for over 20 years while comic genius, Jim Carrey, who has made no secret of his problems with depression, recently said that “life is too beautiful”, for alcohol and drugs. Many of these stars, like Russel Brand, use their platform to share their stories and struggles with the hope of helping others. Matthew Perry, from Friends, even opened up one of his previous homes as a sober space for recovering addicts. Other well-known celebs who have cleaned up their act include Zac Efron, Bradley Cooper, Jack Osbourne, Kelly Osbourne, Calvin Harris and Eva Mendes. Celebrities like Ben Affleck and Demi Lovato have recently booked themselves into rehab facilities again and continue on their road to recovery. Celebs Who’ve Never Had a Drink
While past self-destructive behaviour is the reason for many celebs not to drink, others have stuck to clean living from the word go. And when you take the natural glowing beauty of stars like Blake Lively, Kim Kardashian, Tyra Banks, Jennifer Lopez, Jennifer Hudson, and Natalie Portman into account, they might just be on to a good thing. But it’s not just the gentler gender of celebs that forgo the social lubricant, many of their male counterparts are speaking up about their clean choices. Pharrell Williams said it’s not for him, back in 2004 already, and so did 50 Cent, who said it just didn’t agree with him.
Famous Deaths Tied to Addiction
Not a year goes by that Hollywood doesn’t have to say farewell to one of its own, thanks to untimely death, resulting from some form of addiction. A few names that spring to mind are Heath Ledger, Philip Seymour Hoffman, River Phoenix, Anna Nicole Smith, Cory Monteith, Chris Farley and music greats, Prince, Michael Jackson, Amy Winehouse, Tom Petty, and Whitney Houston. One can only wonder where they’d be today, if they made different choices along the way.
