South Africa’s Cape Town Circuit

With a length of 1690 kilometers (1050 miles), South Africa’s Cape Town circuit is ideal if you have a week or two to ride. The loop begins in the capital city, but quickly heads out into the wilderness of the east coast. From there you go north over the Olifantskop Pass to the Addo National Park for the perfect opportunity to see and photograph big game. Then it is across the Great Karoo to Oudtshoorn and over the Little Karoo Mountains. In Robertson you can visit the vineyards before returning back to Cape Town.

Iceland’s Ring Road

Head to Reykjavik to travel along the Ring Road, 1333 kilometers (828 miles) that provide a good introduction to the island. Using the Ring Road as a guide, you can easily stop off and explore the various interesting corners to be found. The roads are all well-surfaced, so you’ll be able to enjoy the views along the way. Be aware, however, that the weather can quickly turn, even in the summertime.

As seen in a Top Gear Special, Vietnam is an ideal country for motorcycling. If you have limited time, the one must-ride is the Hai Van Mountain Pass connecting historical Hoi An to modern Danang and providing stunning coast views. Ideally, however, you’ll give yourself 25 days to cover the country. The speed limits are quite slow, and you will have adequate time to interact with the locals and see all the beauty Vietnam has to offer.

Canada’s Nova Scotia Cabot Trail

The Cabot Trail in Canada’s Nova Scotia province is full of curvy roads and lovely views. The 298-kilometer (185-mile) road passes through the Cape Breton Highlands. Start in Beddock and along the way you will get a taste of the French and Scottish ancestry of this province. Don’t forget to stop at Pleasant Bay, halfway along the trail, for some whale watching!

Brazil’s Rota Romantica

The 184-kilometer (115-mile) road is one of the best in Brazil and offers landscapes such as hills, forests, vineyards, canyons with waterfalls, and scenic overlooks.

Fjordland, Norway

The good road conditions, abundance of camping and other lodging facilities, and welcoming locals all ensure that you will enjoy your adventure in Norway. There are 450 kilometers (280 miles) between Bergen and Andalsne full of breathtaking fjords and zigzagging roads. Along the way you’ll have to catch a couple of ferries, particularly one which takes you through Nærøyfjord, the narrowest arm of Sognefjorden, the world’s longest and deepest fjord, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Australia’s Great Ocean Road

Stretching 290 kilometers (180 miles) from Melbourne to Peterborough on Australia’s southeastern coast, the Great Ocean Road can be covered in one day. But add a bit more time to your trek in order to give one of the world’s most scenic coastal drives the attention it deserves. Must-sees include the 12 Apostles, limestone rock stacks that began as cliffs attached to the mainland 10-20 million years ago, and the Tower Hill Wildlife Reserve, where you can see koalas, emus, and kangaroos roaming freely in an extinct volcano.

Morocco is a country that begs to be explored by motorcycle. An inexpensive way to travel (count roughly 5500 Moroccan dirham – US$580 – for a 10-day bike rental + gas) with no worries about train delays, just get on your bike and go wherever impulse takes you. If you aren’t sure where to start, the Ceuta to Marrakesh loop covers 2570 kilometers (1600 miles) of coastal regions, mountains, dessert, and palm groves.  Be sure to make time to see Marrakesh, Fez, and Casablanca and enjoy their exotic souks and delicious food as well. Just make sure your horn works as it is the method of communication on the roads.

California’s Pacific Coast Highway

Take your time along the way, stopping off to see the Piedras Blancas Elephant Seals Beach, Redwood National Park, and of course the dramatic scenery of the Big Sur region. Don’t forget to make stops in Monterey for the catch of the day, catch some waves in Santa Cruz, and at the end enjoy all San Francisco has to offer.

Costa Rica

You can’t go wrong exploring anywhere in Costa Rica on a motorcycle. The cheapest and most reliable form of transportation on the island allows you to see it all at your rhythm and go off the beaten paths. Some roads are in better shape than others, so be cautious with those you choose. Experience this tropical paradise with its beaches, jungles, lakes, volcanoes, and mountains while also interacting with the friendly locals.
